  • Create an email profile and add an Exchange account

Before you begin

If you've already been migrated to Exchange Online, instead see Configure Exchange Online with Outlook or Windows Mail.
To successfully configure Exchange in Microsoft Outlook for Windows, your NTLM settings need to be set to NTLMv2 response only/refuse LM and NTLM. If you've recently installed or reinstalled Windows, your NTLM settings may not be set correctly, often causing re-prompts for your IU username and passphrase. If Outlook does not accept your credentials and you're sure you've typed them correctly, check and correct your NTLM settings.

Choose the appropriate instructions below to set up Outlook to connect to an Exchange email account at Indiana University:

  • Create an email profile and add anExchange account. Use these instructions if this is your first time running Outlook on your current device.
  • Add an Exchangeaccount in the Control Panel. Use these instructions if you already use Outlook on your current device and have an existing email profile.
In either set of instructions, replace username with the IU username associated with the Exchange account you are configuring. If you are configuring Outlook to access an Exchange mailbox associated with an IU group account, use the group account's username in place of username. To access your personal IU Exchange account, replace username with your personal IU username.
Microsoft recommends using Cached Exchange Mode for Exchange Online. Cached Exchange Mode is usually on by default. If you do not have it turned on, see the directions to toggle it on.
